Barcelona - The Sketchbook

Just a little bit of Gaudi

Of course we had to take in a little bit of the man of Barcelona - Gaudi.  Antonio Gaudi worked on a variety of different thinks in his life but is most likely known for his 'pointy buildings' aka his architecture.  His work was a piece of art.  Each building he designed was based around organic forms that can be seen in the everyday world.  Twisting like a vine around the sky the building is reaching up as if for sun light.  Inside of the building itself it seemed as though we were travelling through a large corpse of a skeleton.  A bone structure seemed to be on show - however it was taken from a piece of string falling in the center due to gravity and then this was flipped upside down and a flat plane put underneath for a walkway! Brilliant or totally insane - either way he caught the publics eye with his wacky ideas.

On the Train - A number of different characters got on and off the train while we were traveling around.  Here's just a few of the sketches I did while observing the outside world inside a train.

100% Stationary - This was while I was taking in the square outside of our window.  Great view of a number of things such as a fountain in the middle and at different times of the day different people.   At night you get offered a free drink from here there and everywhere and guys offering you any drug you can think of...and during the day you get the ever so polite people wanting you to come into their restaurant and eat and after you tell them for about the third time your not interested I think they get the idea.  Any way... these images are drawn whilst looking out of our bedroom window.

Monserrat Cathedral

The Cathedral we visited was outstanding.  so many people took pictures, disregarding the big far NO CAMERA sign, both written and in picture format but personally I couldn't do that... not that I'm religious but simply because I believe in what's right and wrong - Strong morals or something.  When I got in there first of all I had to grab a seat.  The shear spectacle of a building so beautifully decorated and sculpted deserved some of my time.  I sat, Sarah and Matt followed.  Immediately they whipped out the sketchbook but I sat for just a moment where I was taking it all in - observing once again.  After a while I did joined the other two and got cracking on those drawings that can be seen there.  The time allotted to us really didn't let us do justice to the building in any way.  Such a shame but at least I got to visit it which is more to be said than the majority of our group as they all decided to head up the mountain in an attempt to find something else... or ... I don't even know where they went!! Perhaps they thought the Cathedral was further up... who knows!? Either way I'm glad I went to explore and didn't miss out on such an opportunity.  :D
